Abstract | Ovarian growth in Asian catfish , Clari as batrachus (Linnaeus) which have already been bred for a year was studied for a period of 95 days. C_. batrachus was breed by environmental inducement using two different combinations of alternating water l eve ls and feeding rates namely 2 wee k s, 5% body weigh t (bw)/day; 2 week, 10% bw/day; 4 weeks, 5% bw/day; and 4 weeks, 10% bw/day respective1y . Nests containing synthetic packing material were provided to facilitate egg collection. Eggs collected were treated with 1 .0% sodium sulphite to dissolve sticky matrix facilitating handling and co un t in g. Mean final GSI val es of female s were 7 . 69±0.49%, 6. 1±0.04% , 5.2±1.0% and 7.2±0.60% respective l y and 0 . 03±0 . 05%, 0.03±0 . 04%, 0.24±0 . 0 1% and 0.25±0.03% for males respectively. No significant differences in ovarian development in the treatments was observed as fish used were spent fish. The fat tissue loss increased with GSI. Spawning was observed three times in single pair replicates only. Total and relative fecundity were significant higher in the 5% level of feed but egg diameter in treatments on a 10% feed were significantly larger. No significant differences were observed in water quality between treatments. |
