AbstractStudies for paddy yield estimation using remote sensing data acquired from the LANDSAT TM system with six bands (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7,) were conducted. The command area of Nong Khea Irrigation project, situated at about 45 km from the AIT campus was selected for the study. Three images taken on different days were visually and digitally analyzed for the estimation of rice cultivated area. This was obtained with over 90% classification accuracy. False Color Composite of SR 4G 3B was selected for the identification of paddy cultivated area at maturity stage. Band combination of 1 3 4 and 5 was selected as an appropriate subset in digital analysis for the estimation of paddy areas. It was observed that signature of rice is highly influenced by soil type. An attempt was made to develop a relationship between reflectance values and actual grain yield using an image captured in fully ripened stage of crop. Computerized plant process model was developed for the simulation of rice growth and yield per unit area and the model was validated by a field experiment conducted at AIT research field. The model can estimate yield from cultivated areas more accurately than using average yield figures.
