AbstractA microcomputer program for the least cost design of water distribution systems using linear programming mod el was developed in this study . The program is capable of designing networks of up to about 25 links (f or an IBM compatible microcomputer with RAM of 640 kB ). The program can deal with a completely looped, partially looped/branched or completely branched system. It can cater for multiple sources system, multiple operating states, balancing reservoirs and booster pumping stations. Flow distribution was carried out by the shortest path principle. Feasible flow distributions can also be used for input into the program to generate design solutions. The program developed was applied to e l even case studies on four networks to test various features included in the program. The output are the optimum diameters of commercially available pipe sizes and their corresponding lengths, and the optimum pumping heads under various operating states for the particular input cost function. The objective is to minimize the overall system cost. Comparative study of the program developed "LOOPT" with t h e two programs named "LOOP" and " BRANCH" developed under the United Nations Development Program (UNDP ) was carried out. Evaluation shows that the LOOPT has the advantage over these programs of being able to design looped networks with optimization and taking pumping energy cost into consideration. The capabilities, applicability , significance, potential problems and limitations of LOOPT s bow s that it can be used conveniently with a microcomputer. It can be further developed and improved to enable it to be used for the purpose of practical application s in the future. Program Documentation and User Guidelines have been prepared alongside this study to facilitate its use , continued improvements and development.
