AbstractSystems availability and reliability have become an important issue almost in all manufacturing related activities. Decision makers in top management need to know the availability and reliability of their system/plant before making decision of how they can produce the produc t and when. This study is concerned with the use of simulation technique through SIMPLE++ simulation software to estimate the availability of sugar plant. Use of standby redundancy has been proposed to increase the availability of the subsystem subject to available budget or the level of availability as specified by the management. The info1mation derived from this study could then be utilized for better system design. The models are developed using mean failure and repair times of each machine. Inter failure time of the machines and their repair times have been assumed to follow negative exponential distribution . Availability and reliability of each machine and two subsystems has been estimated by recording the idle time and the expected repair time needed for failed machines for 4 weeks of operation. Some discussions and recommendations are proposed to serve as guidelines further studies in the future.
