AbstractThe genetic algorithms that employ the Darwinian survival-of-the-fittest theory to solve the optimization problems are proved potential in structural optimization problems. During the past decade, various methods were proposed to improve the traditional genetic algorithms and to integrate the genetic algorithms with structural optimization problems. More disruptive process, more dete1ministic rule and adaptive parameter were proposed to yield better performance than those of traditional genetic algorithms that use less disruptive process, probabilistic rule and fixed parameter. Unfortunately, all these methods were taken into account individually and most have not been applied in structural optimization problems. This study assesses the impact of different methods for genetic algorithms and optimization methods for space truss optimization, including two methods for structural optimization, penalty function method and augmented Lagrangian method, and three categories of improvement for genetic algorithms: (1) roulette wheel selection, stochastic sampling selection, and deterministic sampling selection for reproduction operation (2) I-point crossover, 2-point crossover, 20%-uniform crossover and 50%-uniform crossover for crossover operation (3) constant-mutation-rate and varying-mutation-rate for mutation operation. At last, three space trusses are served as numerical examples.
