Abstract | In current Vietnam's power system, power sources are allocated unevenly among regions throughout the country, posing the need for large power transmission in the North-Central-South direction. While the transmission capacity on the North - Central - South transmission line is always high, the capacity of inter-regional power transmission lines are still limited, which causes a low reserve and safety in the national power system. In addition to reviewing different technologies of high-voltage power transmission, this research study will investigate the potential of investment in the HVDC transmission system in Vietnam by analysing different possible solutions to improve the inter regional transmission to share the surplus power from the Central regions to the North and the South, thus, ensuring national power security and system stability. With a total transmission length of more than 1,700 km and a significantly large capacity (upto 8,000 MW), HVDC is considered a suitable technology to overcome the energy shortfall expected to occur by 2045. |
