Abstract | A study of pilot scale composting of municipal solid waste with forced aeration was undertaken with 4 sets of experiments, four piles for each set. The experimental piles were carried out with an initial C:N ratio in the range of 20-25, 25-30, 30-35 and more than 35%. The aerobic condition of each set was provided with continuous aeration, 10 h. aeration and 2 h. stop aeration, and 8 11. aeration and 4 h. stop aeration. Each pile was fitted with the same seeding and controlled moisture in the range of 50-60%. The chemical characteristics of compost extract was analysed to observe the progress of the composting reaction. The results obtained indicated that the variation of the chemical characteristics such as TOC content and weight ratio of TOC/Org- N from the compost extract were good parameters to assess the municipal solid waste composting reaction. The soluble organic breakdown reaction in the co1npost pile occurred in the first few days of the thermophilic phase. This reaction was found to be limited by the soluble substrate concentration with respect to TOC. An average value of this TOC concentration was found to be 8.87 1ng/g (dry weight) of the solid sample. The different mode of aeration had also showed Lo influence the composting reac1 ion rate. The compost pile with 8 h. aeration and 4 h. stop aeration almost gave tl1e shortest composting period with respect to TOC stabilization. While with continuous aeration, it gave a longer composing Lime to stabilize . Under the same mode of aeration, the compost pile with 25- 30 initial C:N ratio gave a faster composting reaction . |
