Abstract | Bench-scale experiments were carried out to study the performance of sequencing batch anaerobic reactors ( SBAR) on substrate removal and biogas production using a synthetic high strength organic wastewater. The fill :react ratios and the cycle times of SBAR were varied to study their effects o n SBAR performance. The sett lability of SBAR micro-organisms was also tested. A conventional completely mixed reactor (CCMR) was also run in parallel to compare its performance with the SBAR. Efficient soluble and total substrate removal of 73% and 54% were observed in the SBAR operating with a cycle time of 16 days and a fill react ratio of 1: 3. The fill time or organic loading rate during fill time was found to influence the SBAR performances more than the fill: react ratio . The quasi-second order substrate removal kinetics with a modified reaction rate constant expressed the SBAR performance. |
