AbstractFeasibility study of using UF membrane alone to treat t apioca starch wastewater and effluent from anaerobic filter as post-treatment were conducted. The results obtained show that in t erms of COD removal efficiency and filtrate rate, treatment of tapioca starch wastewater using UF membrane alone is impractical and post-treatment of effluent of this wastewater from anaerobic filt er is possible. Furthermore, the study of treatment of synthetic starch wastewater using anaerobic digester coupled with hollow fiber ultraf iltration membrane for solid/liquid separation was investigated . The study was conducted with different pore sizes of membrane of . 03, . 05, .10 and .15 µm. From the study using organic loading rate of 1.76 kg COD/m3 ·d, gives t he similar results in terms of COD removal and biogas production. Thus the study were conducted with different organic loading rates of 2. 51, 3.53, 5.88, 8.83 and 11.77 kg COD/m3 ·d respectively. Th~ system. was capable of achieving 81.1 percent COD removal at an organic loading rate of 11 . 77 kg COD/m3 ·d and up to 92.2 percent COD removal at an organic l oading rate of 1.76 kg COD/m3 ·d. Maximum gas yield of 0.74 m3 /kg COD utilized was obtained at 92 .2 percent COD removal . The stable operation was kept over an operational period of 3 months at an average net flux of 1.85 * 10- 7 m3 /(m2 ·s). The key factors for the stable operation are low transmembrane pressure and intermittent filtration.
