AbstractThe effect of Sludge Retention Time (SRT ), pH and Dissolved Oxygen (DO) on the nutrient removal in Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBR ) was studied by u sing actual sewage i n four laboratory scale reactors. The effect of influent characteristics on t he removal efficiencies was also test e d . Excellent biological phosphorus and nitrogen removal were observed in the SBR process under proper control of the operating parameters. When the maximum dissolved oxygen was controlled at 50 per cent level and pH at 7, 98 per cent phosphate phosphorus, 84 per cent total phosphorus and 83 per cent total nitrogen removal efficiencies were obtained . SRT played a n important role in the nitrogen and phosphorus removal . Phosphorus content in t h e sludge in creased with the increase in SRT, but the rate of increase in sludge phosphorus content was not sufficient to off set the reduction in sludge wasting . A mathematical mode l was formulated wit h the mass balance of phosphorus to predict the phosphorus removal.
