AbstractThe Malaysian Highway Authority is carrying out various tests on the soft Muar clay , which has been a problematic soil for the construction of the highway and expressway embankments. This study is intended to determine the geotechnical parameters, required . for the settlement and the stability analysis, for that project. Various strain controlled laboratory tests were performed on the undisturbed soil samples from 2. Om to 12. 5 m depths, from the Muar flood plain , Johore state , Malaysia . The tests comprised of direct shear tests in undrained conditions, unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests , anisotropic ally Ko - consolidated undrained triaxial compression a nd extension tests. Al so the stress path tests simulating the field conditions were conducted on the undisturbed samples. The soft Muar clay is in the normally consolidated to slightly consolidated range . The undrained strength ranges between 1 .2 t/m2 and 2.4 t/m 2indicating that the clay is very soft . The pore pressure parameter A ranges between 0.3 a nd 0 .6. The critical stat e parameters M and O' are found to range within 1.04 to 1.09 and 26 . 3° to 27.5° respectively . The ratio Eu/su ranges between 123 to 1938.
