AbstractDirect s h ear and Pullout tests were conducted on lateritic residual soil to evaluate the soil-reinforcement interaction at low normal pressures. The tests were carried out at dry and wet side of optimum with compaction density of 95% standard proctor density as well as at optimum moisture content at 10096 of the standard proctor compaction density. In t h e pullout tests, the soil compaction was achieved with Wacker tamping machine , while the densities and water contents were checked for uniformity by using the Troxler Nuclear gage. Electrical resistance strain gauges were used to evaluate the in-soil strain response and the stress transfer mechanism, while the mat displacement at front was measured with a dial gauge and checked with a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) . The data acquisition system recorded the mat displacements and axial tension i n the wires u sing the 21X micro logger. The tests showed the pullout resistance to be a function of t h e vertical nor mal stress and the mat parameters. 150 X 225 X 6 mm diameter welded wire mesh was found to be more efficient than 150 X 150 X 6 mm, 150 X 150 X 12 mm and 150 X 225 X 12 mm diameter meshes, so far tested with compacted lateritic soil as a backfill in this study, in exploiting passive resistance in front of the transverse members of the mesh.
