| Abstract | This study attempts to evaluate the possibility of application of weathered clay in a welded bar reinforced soil structure. Twenty-nine welded wire mats were pulled in a full scale testing apparatus. A total of eighty-seven tests were run using welded 3/8 " and 1/4" diameter steel mesh of varying aperture sizes , namely: 6" X 9 " , 6 " X 12", and 6 " X 18 " with weathered c l ay as backfill mate ria l -obtained from AIT campus . The soil specimen was compacted at 95 % Standard Proctor and tested at wet and dry sides of the optimum water content . These tests were done with overburden pressures ranging from 1 to 13 t/m2 • From the investigation, it was found that the contribution of skin adhesion/friction is quite minimal and the bulk of the pullout resistance is carried by the transverse wires in bearing. It was also found that the 6 " X 12,. me-sh exhibited the highest pullout resistance among the mesh sizes used in the dry side compacted backfill while 6" x 9 " mesh was for wet side compacted backfill. The results dictate that water greatly affect the resistance of reinforced soil mass. The strains induced in the longitudinal bars were quite s mall compared to the extensible wire (i.e. Tensar grids) about O. 01 % to 0. 2 % only . The distribution of the resistance mobilized at each grid junction was found to be linear. |
