AbstractSmear effects due to the installation of vertical drains were studied in both the laboratory and the field . In the laboratory , smear effects were investigated by using the large scale consolidation test apparatus with a centrally located vertical drain for which reconstituted clay was used . In the field , the settlement behavior under a full scale test embankment of 5 m high which lay over the ground with vertical drains driven by two different mandrels was monitored. The laboratory test results showed that the smear zone can be assumed to be twice the equivalent mandrel diameter. The ratio of horizontal permeability in undisturbed zone to that in smeared zone was about 1 .5 to 2 . The horizontal permeability in smeared zone was approximated to be equal to the vertical permeability. From the field test , faster settlement rat~ in the small mandrel area than in the large mandrel area was observed. The settlement rate ln both areas were faster than the predicted rate which was based on the laboratory-determined horizontal coefficient of consolidation. The method of ASAOKA (1978) was adopted to predict the final settlement and future settlement rate.
