AbstractA comprehensive set of laboratory investigations was carried out to study· the strength behaviour of partially saturated rockfill materials taking degree of saturation and percentage of fine content as the controlling parameters. The material used in this study is that used in the construction of the embankment of Chiew Larn dam in southern part of Thailand. Main part of the study included consolidated undrained triaxial tests using conventional apparatus. The gradations A, B, C, D were tested having 0%, 6%, I 0%, 15% fine contents respectively. The samples were prepared at a dry depsity of about 1. 95 t/cu.m. They were 2 inches in diameter with the variatlorl of degree of saturation from lower to higher value in steps. The values of confining pressure used were 5 tf/sq.m., 8 tf/sq.m. and 1 Otf/sq.m. Shear strength value at failure showed almost linear decrease with increase in degree of saturation. Cohesion value showed substantial decrease with increase in degree of saturation and it was zero for fully saturated samples. The decrease in internal friction angle with increase in degree of saturation was not much and was within the range of 30 to 36 degrees. The material showed tra11sit1on trom granular to silty behaviour with the increase in fine content from 5% to 10%. 1t gave parallel lines in the plotting of total stress minus measured excess pore pressure showing the effect of suction. Another set of tests was carried out using triaxial cell for partially saturated soil preparing samples for dry density of about 2.14 tf/cu.rn. and with 10% of fine content. The sample diameter was 2 inches which was the same as the previous studies. The value of shear strength at failure for about 40% degree of saturation was substantially higher as compared to that of about 70% degree of saturation and the dry sample showed strain softening behaviour. The excess pore air pressure gave negative value at failure for all samples as they were dense. Effective stress condition at failure was affected by the value of suction at decreased degree of saturation.
