AbstractThis study presents the behavior of sand containing fines under cyclic loading. A series of the cyclic triaxial tests were performed under uniform and irregular loading conditions. The test samples were artificially made of Nakorn Pathom sand mixed with bentonite and kaolinite in different percentages. The initial sand. At test results under uniform loading condition, showed liquefaction strength for sand containing fines than earlier cycles, less than about about 10 to 15, both a higher the clean types of fine content samples showed similar nature of decrease in liquefaction strength defined by D.A. axial strain with an increase in fine content. At more than 25 to 30 cycles, the samples showed an increase in liquefaction strength with an increase in fine content. Clear relation between plasticity index and liquefaction could not be found in this study. Increase in liquefaction strength defined by D. A. axial strains after 25 to 30 cycles Has found with an increase in clay content. A few irregular loading tests were also carried out by using acceleration record of KAIHOKU-LG during 1978 MIYAGIKEN- OKI earthquake to compare the behavior obtained under two different types of loading. Clear effect of fine content on liquefaction characteristics under irregular loading condition Ras not obtained. However, t he coefficient of irregularity Has found to be 0. 584.
