AbstractThe Pleistocene geology of the Khorat- Khon Kaen area consists of unconsolidated eolian and fluvial deposits overlying the weathered Mahasarakam and Khok Kruat formations. Th e northern part of the area is mainly blanketed by the loessial soils , whereas the all uvial depos it is quite prevalent in the southern part. The structural arrangements of the loessial soils resemble more or less the honey-comb structures . Both the red and the yellow loessial soil sare non - dispersive , but are highly erodible in natural conditions. The comp acted loessial soils are stable and do not erode upon subjection to flowing water. The loessial soils are characterized by a low total dissolved salts, low sodium contents, and a s light acid ic pH values. The critical values of SAR, beyond which the soil is more likely to go into dispersion, are found t o be about 7 - 8 %. The loessial soils are highly collapsible with the maximum collapse percent age of about 28 - 32 %. These soils are very strong in the dry conditions, but col lapse under very l ow pressures upon subjection to water.
