AbstractThe Semarang city is located in the eastern end of North Serayu Range and the Northern Coastal Plain of Central Java. The landform features in Semarang comprise of "Candi Hills", "Notopuro Plateau", delta, tidal flat, lagoon, barrier beach and alluvial. The northern part of Semarang city is situated on rather flat low lying area which is built up mainly of delta-tidal flat deposits. These deposits are composed mainly of soft silty clays. The southern part is situated on "Candi Hills" and "Notopuro Plateau" which is built up of marine claystone of Undifferentiated Marine Beds, terrestrial sediments of Damar F'ormation and lahar of Notopuro Formation. The marine claystone and soft silty clays usually pose problems and adversely affect the constructional procedure from the economic standpoint. Difficult foundation materials, insufficient water supply, inadequate waste disposal, landslides and flood are problems related to the development of Semarang city. This prevailent situation coupled with the scarce engineering geology information has necessitated to conduct engineering geological investigation. Based on geological data gathered during the field work combining with all available borehole data, subsoil profiles are constructed. Physical properties and engineering characteristics of surf icial deposits as well as subsoil conditions are presented. In order to estimate the soil compressibility and shear strength by means of simple and quick method, empirical relations as a simple linear function of soil parameters (natural water content, liquid limit, compression index and unconfined compressive strength) are expressed as linear regression equations for various areas. Construction materials available in the city is fill materials whereas coarse and fine aggregates are brought in from outside of the city. Water supply for Semarang city is originated from surface water of Garang river and groundwater (deepwells and springs). There are two solid waste disposal sites and open dumping and burning methods are used for solid waste disposal.
