Abstract | This thesis concentrates on the development of computer programs based on the delay-time and the generalized reciprocal methods for the interpretation of seismic refraction data. A comparison of the results interpreted from both these methods is also provided. This comparative study is based on the computational time required by the two methods, the accuracy of the velocity obtained, the effect of the planarity condition and the smoothening effect. In comparison to the GRM, it is found that the delay-time method gives a much better representation of the subsurface velocities. The intensity of smoothening effect seems to be less for the delay-time method and in this case a correction factor has to be applied for non-planar refractor. The manual computational time for the GRM is much greater, in comparison to the delay-time method. Furthermore, a computer program for generating synthetic time-distance data using the ray-theory approach for different three layer earth model has been developed. Generating first arrivals can be extremely useful when limited coverage of the shallow refractor occurs in a three layer case. The delay-time program is utilized in order to interpret the actual field data from the Caledonian dam-site (Kotmale Project) in Sri-lanka. |
