Abstract | The rapid growth of container transportation is causing a number of problems in container terminal . The need for appropriate allocation of handling equipment for operations such a s loading /unloading and l and transport from quays, is widely recognized . Optimal allocation of equipment permits the efficient operation of a terminal . Considerable mathematical research has been done to meet this requirement. Most of it ha s been carried out using either the queuing theory or simulation techniques. However, with regard to the former , t h e problem needed simplification whereas the latter is time consuming and costly . Container handling is a complex operation a nd many decisions have to be ma de every da y by day or even by shorter period of time. The purpose of the study is to determine the optimal allocation of handling equipment such as mobile cranes , ship gears, and trailers, with the a id of computer, in a container terminal. Further the purpose i s to evaluate the efficiency of Bangkok port and make a comparison with the theoretical outputs. A computer-based optimization system was developed with the a id o f dynamic programming and simulation techniques , applicable to container handling in a port. The Lagrange Multiplier procedure was us e d to solve the multi- dimensional dynamic programming problems , which was found to be the most effective and the least computer time consuming . Simulation was used to check the validity of the system. It was found, through the validity check, that the differences in outputs fall within a narrow range with a mean of 1 TEU and a STD of 12 TEU . Despite in the case study a large difference was found between the actual and theoretical outputs . The system d eve lope d is applicable to any container terminal in the world . Any numbers of berths, all kinds of container vessels, cranes and trailers could b e accounted for by mean s of t h e optimal solution . Although the two phase optimization does not provide the optimal solution, it was found to b e precise enough for real world cases. |
