AbstractUsually, the estimation of foreign trade cargo volume is based on either past cargo throughputs or on major economic indices. These methods do not take national, or regional, economic structure into consideration. However, since foreign trade cargo comes from every production sector, it is closely related to the whole economic structure rather than any single sector. In this sense, cargo throughputs or one or several economic indices alone cannot exactly reveal the complicated relationship between them. The main purpose of this study is to forecast export and import cargo volume relying on the relationship between them and economic growth from the viewpoint of national economic structure analysis. The input-output table is employed to make such an analysis. First, aggregation of 180 sectors of the input-output table to 24 sectors is achieved. Next, the analysis tries to update the table by the RAS method so that the estimation may relate more directly to the structural changes in Thailand's economy. In the process, modified criteria are also used for the RAS technique. Then, the estimation of the cargo volume of Thailand's exports and imports for 1991 is achieved both exogenously and endogenously. During the estimation import value, import content of final demand and import content of internal demand are classified. It is also intended to transfer the money value of foreign trade to its cargo volume. Some reclassification arrangements of sectors in the input-output table and the Foreign Trade Statistics are made. The calculation of the whole procedure is carried out by using the data in Thailand. There is also some discussion of transportation supply from a macro development strategy viewpoint. The result shows that with the high growth rate of Thailand's economy, the foreign trade volume will increase substantially, and the total cargo volume of export and import will be 64,284 thousands tons
