AbstractThis study is an investigation into the characteristics of the users as well as the non-users of the expressway in Bangkok. The dominant factors that affect the diversion trends of the drivers were also examined and analyzed. Data were collected at the south-end of the Wiphawadi-Rangsit Road where there are two types of alternative routes for the southbound traffic flow. The first of these alternative routes is the expressway network and the second is the surface roads. All the data were recorded in such a way that the Din Daeng expressway serves as the point of origin. Extension of zoning in the study area was set at five kilometers from any point of the expressway system. Application of statistical analyses such as the T-test and the discriminant analysis were used to analyze these factors and other various possible factors affecting the non-users. The perceived time difference and perceived distance difference were identified as two major explanatory variables of the diversion characteristics. Distributions of the perceived values and their relationships with the real values were also examined. An experimental zoning method was also applied to evaluate the applicability of the methodology. This aggregation of zones to five major zones showed a satisfactory distinction between the expressway users and non- users in Bangkok.
