AbstractRural development is a complex economic , social and political change which requires the participation of the entire population, old and young, men and women. Few decades ago, the role of women in development was not properly taken into consideration . Their potentials were not explored and utilized. This, in fact, denied countries huge human resources, particularly in rural areas where women made up the biggest group. In the 70s and 80s, women's role and potentials have been a major issue in various conferences and discussions . The other half of mankind has been seen as a crucial factor for development and they are now not only beneficiaries but also actors in the development scene. The study of women 's participation in rural development in the two Communes, Trung Tu and Hoa Son in Ung Hoa District, Ha Son Binh Province has shown that the women are well aware of their role in rural development. They are actively engaged in the productive labour both at home and outside. In the economic field, they work more than men, contributing more than men to family income . Women also actively take part in social and political activities. Their participation is motivated by their consciousness of their role in rural development efforts. They shoulder a major part in rural development . However, women have to work very hard and in very difficult conditions. They face various hindering factors to their social and political participation. New and concrete policies and measures need to be formulated and iŽnp1emented to lessen women 's workload, improve their living and working conditions . It is necessary to investigate further other issues relating to women's labour and life in rural area.
