AbstractIn modern times we are confronted with the shrinkage of resources, limited availability of capital, climbing cost of borrowing money and decreasing purchasing power. In t his scenario, the Value Engineering method has proven its capability to combat run- away costs and helps to make better utilization of the available capital and resources in the construction industry. This method was introduced in Indonesia several years ago a nd was applied to some construction projects. However, the usefulness of Value Engineering (VE), its wider application and acceptance by the construction industry needs to be ensured by creating greater awareness amongst the various participants. Government back-up, through legislation binding the parties concerned, viz., the owner, the consultant and the contractor, is necessary to ensure its successful application. This research includes the findings of the application of VE to two types of projects, viz., civil engineering and building construction projects in Indonesia. In a Baros bridge project, the cost savings of 24 % were effected by c hanging the prestressed box girder beam to a composite beam (partially prestressed girder with reinforced concrete s lab) and by changing the steel pile, to prefabricated prestressed concrete pile for foundation. Similarly, in the Supreme Court building project, the cost savings of 6 % were effected by changing the RC s h ell roof to the spherical steel truss covered by metal sheet and by changing the acoustic ceiling (import quality) to a locally made softboard ceiling. The savings generated through the se studies confirm that Value Engineering as a management technique is a valuable tool which can b exploited in the construction industry .
