AbstractCarbonisation and torrefaction of sawdust were carried out in a laboratory scale pyrolizer to study the yield and properties of the products . Carbonisation and torrefaction of woodchips were carried out in Muffle furnace a nd oven. Coated torrefied wood which consisted of a central core of to rre fi e d wood and a s urf ace layer of c h arcoal,was prepared from to r re fi ed wood. Tests were carried out to measu re density a nd o bserve the relative combustion be hav iour of torrefied wood and charcoal . It was found t hat coated torrefied wood was between torrefied wood and charcoal in terms of combustion rate and smoking .
