AbstractThe study was undertaken to analyze and to compare the cost of rice production on animal and hand tractor farms in Karawang district , West J ava. The village with animal farms is in hilly area . The average wage rate on anima l farms was about Rp. 25 00, - per day and t h e price of paddy was only Rp. 18 0 to Rp. 200 per kg. The village with hand tractor farms is located 25 km from animal farms village. Th e average labor wage rate on h and tractor farms was about Rp. 3500 per day and the price of paddy was about Rp. 23 0 per kg. It was found t h at for farms where anima l s were used for l a nd preparation, it was most economical to use them up to farm size of 1 .5 hectares. In contrast, for t h e farmers using own hand tractors it was economical to use them on farms of more t h an 1 .5 hectares in size. The cost of rice production for hand tractor farm higher than that for animal farms. The net income of tractor farms was higher than that of animal farms if the tractors were utilized on other farms for custom- hired preparation. was hand hand land It was also found that the land preparation cost of hand tractor farms was equal to the custom rate at about 11 ha, whereas using animals was always higher than that of custom rate u sing hand tractor. Up to about 2 hectare, the l and preparation cost using animals was lower than that using a own hand tractor. For farm size more 'than 2 hectare, l a nd preparation cost using a own hand tractor was lower than that using animals.
