Abstract | The horizontal a nd vertical components of soil reaction for flat tines of different widths ( 5 , 10 , 15 a nd 20 cm) a nd rake angles (45 , 60, 75 a nd 90 deg . ) operating a t 10 cm a nd 15 cm depths were recorded in dry sand under quasi -static condition. A vertical tine of 5 cm width at 20 cm depth was a l so studied . Soil reactions were observed to be cyclic in nature with distinct peak and trough values for all the tines under study except for vertical tines of 5 cm width at 15 cm a nd 20 cm depths . There was no significant variation in the peak to trough draft ratio with tine width and rake angle. The rupture profile on the soil surface could be constructed by straight lines emanating from the tine edges a nd a curved boundary . Maximum rupture distance increased with increase in tine width . Soil failure was three dimensional for all t he tines studied. Narrow tines had more prominent effect on soil disturbance due to large contribution by s ide crescents. Stabilised surcharge was trapezoidal in shape with maximum height at the center of the tine and varied symmetrically across t he tine width. The maxi mum he ight increased with increase in tine width a nd depth but it was independent of rake angle . A linear relationship was found between stabilised surcharge height and tine width at both 10 cm a nd 15 cm depths. A mathematical mode l was also developed to predict the surcharge build- up . |
