AbstractLaboratory and field tests were conducted to determine the spray distribution pattern and deposition characteristics of charged spray from an electrostatic spinning disc sprayer. Spray distribution pattern was determined using a laboratory spray patternator. A standard fluorometric analysis quantified the amount of fluorescent material deposited on the target. Six-level artificial plants and soybean plants were used as targets in t he laboratory and field tests, respectively. Low s peed (2000 rpm) spray pattern had a saddle-shaped curve with a hump near the center. At 3000 to 5000 rpm, t he spray pattern assumed a bell-shaped curve. The spray pattern uniformity improved while tilting the disc at 30° backward and utilizing two liquid feed tubes positioned 180° apart. In the laboratory tests, t he deposition efficiency of uncharged spray was between 32% to 53% . Optimum electrode voltage was found at 2.5 kV where the deposition efficiency of charged spray was between 55% to 94%, giving relative ·increases of between 1. 6- to 2. 0-fold over uncharged spray. Deposition efficiency improved as disc speed increased and deteriorated as flowrate increased. Multilevel deposition analysis showed between 2- to 6-fold relative increases in deposition due to charging at the intermediate and lower levels of the target and between 1.1- to 1.7-fold improvement on the top levels. Underside surface deposition accounted only between 4% to 10% of the total deposition.
