AbstractThe effect of rake angle, width and depth of operation of tines of simple geometry on draft and vertical force in silty clay loam soil were studied. The experiments we re conducted by moving tines of aspect ratio 1, 2 and 3 at two depths of operation, 10 cm and 15 cm and three rake angles namely, 60°, 75° and 90°, at a speed of 1 km/hr under t he controlled laboratory soil bin condition at a moisture l eve l of 14% db. Both draft and vertical force were cyclic in phase with each other for every combination of rake ang l e, width and depth for a 11 the tines. The peak draft and peak upwards vertica1 force were found to increase with the increase in rake ang l e and aspect ratio; the rate of increase being more at 15 cm depth than at 10 cm depth. The increase in wave length and the difference in peak and trough value of draft with the increase in rake angle and aspect ratio, each was found to have similar trends. At higher rake angles, the rate of increase in both wave length and difference in peak and trough value was greater at higher depth than at lower depth, for t he same value of aspect ratio , whereas, at higher aspect ratio value, it was greater at lower depth than that at higher depth for t he same value of rake angle .
