AbstractThe objective of this research was to study the energy inputs in the production of irrigated wheat crop on animal and tractor cultivation farms using different means of irrigation in Faisalabad District of Punjab, Pakistan. Energy input/output patterns were analyzed and energy ratios were calculated for various categories of farms. A six month survey was made of daily inputs of energy to 181 wheat plots representing holding of 51 farmers in 1 2 villages of Faisalabad district of Punjab. Energy inputs from human and bullock labor, electric motors, diesel engines and tractors, as well as seed , fertilizer/manure and pesticides used were recorded through bi-weekly visits to these farmers. The total energy input on tractor farms with tubewe ll, canal and canal plus tubewell irrigation were 18, 16.4 and 16 . 6 GJ/ha and on bullock farms 16.3 , 12.9 and 13 . 6 GJ/ha , respectively. The contribution of fertilizer, fuel and electricity energy inputs were found to be much higher as compared to other energy inputs. The wheat yield varied from 2.7 to 3.7 t/ha and 2.4 to 3 t/ha on tractor and bullock farms, respectively . The energy inputs in the production of wheat crop on the tractor and bullock cultivation farms were highest on tubewell irrigated farms followed by canal plus tubewell irrigated farms and canal irrigated farms.
