AbstractThe Paddy Marlceting Board rice milling complex at Horowpathana, in Sri Lanlca, was studied in detail to effect curative modifications inorder to improve the performance of its plant and machinery. The plant was operating at around 30% of the rated capacity, and incurring an annual loss of Rs. 0.81 million. Each unit of the preprocessing plant was tested for capacity. The receiving and cleaning unit was found to work 30.5% below the design capacity. The parboiling unit was working 60.4% below capacity, and the drying and tempering unit was working 20. 7% below capacity. The boiler was found to work at 29% of its design capacity and at an efficiency of 39.5 %. Therefore the receiving and cleaning unit, parboiling unit, drying and tempering unit and the boiler were identified as the units worlcing below design capacity. The components contributing towards the inefficient operations of these units were identified. Selected components of each unit, parboiling tanks, elevator no. 7 and boiler were further tested to identify reason for poor performance and to effect modifications. The modified pre processing units were re- tested and found to work at 65% of the design capacity and with planned sequencing of operations the plant could be operated as a financially viable milling complex operating at Rs. 0.6 million profit.
