AbstractA five month on-farm study of Udon Patina integrated farm located in Udornthani Province, Northeast Thailand was carried out from January to May, 1990 to study its historical development, various subsystems, operating procedures and management techniques. Udon Patina farm, established in 1980 to support the rural development activities of the Center for Church Planting and Church Growth in Northeast Thailand (CCPCGNET) is a fine example of onfarm resource integration where pig, duck, paragrass, fruit and vegetables are subsystems supporting the production of the three crops of fish a year, the major subsystem of the farming system. and onin four different activities drained to The study was mainly divided into a historical farm monitoring study. All production activities months were monitored. Three ponds representing stages were selected for detailed study and all and inputs were monitored. These three ponds were measure fish biomass and silt accumulation. On the historical development of the farm, all computerized and non-computerized data bases of the farm were studied and two formal and one informal interview were recorded with its Managing Director. The farm, rain-fed until 1987, has gone several changes both in its infrastructure and subsystems, dropping whatever was not economically feasible. Despite poor economic performance of the pig subsystem in the past, it is the only option providing large amounts of high quality manure and urine required for natural food production for fish. Production records of some of the ponds during the eighties have fish production as ton/ha/year. constructed high as 16 Although established to generate income, the farm is not an entirely commercial unit. There are inefficiencies related to management of its labour force and misuse of on and off farm resources in all production and service units. The farm may be run profitably provided that the whole management process is changed and stern efforts made to improve the inefficiencies of its workforce.
