AbstractThe steel industry is one of the largest consumers of energy both in industrialized and developing countries. Not only does the steel industry use great amounts of energy per ton of product, but the levels of output are also relatively high. The improvement of energy consumption in the steel industry will therefore, significantly affect a country's overall energy consumption and enhance the cost competitiveness of the industry due to large share of energy in production cost. An energy model has been developed to assess the energy performance of the Blast Furnace operation which are the most significant energy consumers. The model also predict important operating parameters for its optimal performance. Energy auditing has been carried out in an integrated Iron and Steel industry in India. The various data obtained from the concerning divisions has been analyzed by using the developed model. The estimates of different energy consumption and energy losses has been obtained by using the first and second law of thermodynamics. The comparison of the actual operation of the blast furnace has been made with that of the theoretical one and the same has been represented graphically. The performance analysis of the B.F. system during the data collection period shows that the first and second law efficiency are 77.3% and 39.13% respectively. Energy conservation opportunities has been identified. Possible measures has been suggested in order to obtain efficient energy utilization particularly in the ironmaking stage.
