AbstractCentrifugal pumps can be used as "Pump-as- Turbine (PaT)" by reversing the flow and operating as a Francis turbine. However, main drawback for PaT when compared with purpose-built turbine is the lack of flow regulation device, which resulting in output power regulation problem when inflow condition change. This drawback, combined with the nature of pump, which is designed for only one best optimal condition, lead to rapid performance degradation when operate at part-load condition. The new proposed concept "Impulse Pump-as- Turbine (Impulse PaT)" will use centrifugal pump impeller to be used as hydro turbine by pairing with spear valve injector from impulse hydro turbine. The injector regulates water inlet flow rate; thus power output of this new turbine concept can be controlled. Additional benefit from utilized spear valve injector is low loss of turbine efficiency when operate at part-load condition, therefore this new concept turbine can be operated at wide range of flow condition without losing good efficiency. Since this concept is new and never explored by other researcher, theoretical study of this new concept will be adapted from study of performance of inward-flow jet wheel. Result from I-D calculation shows that this new proposed concept is feasible with reasonable efficiency. Results from numerical calculation by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) shows that efficiency of this new turbine concept is limited by number of blades in commercially available pump and also from incomplete energy transfer due to some portion of water bounce off. Therefore, the inclusion of pump volute will significantly increase performance and efficiency of turbine system by force water to pass through impeller blade. Validation result from experimentation shows that by using two injectors in reverse operation mode, maximum efficiency of 77% can be achieved. The selection procedure for this new type of Impulse PaT from centrifugal pump also developed with actual test case to confirm the validity of this procedure. In conclusion, this newly proposed concept of impulse turbine from centrifugal pump shows a huge potential for using as economical turbine for small size hydro turbine.
