Abstract | Styrofoam (SF) is used in many applications such as building insulation, transportations of food items and other goods, etc. The life span of Styrofoam decreases when it is kept in contact with water and exposed to sunlight for a long time. In this research, a zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles top coated acrylic paint coating is investigated as a protective coating for styrofoam. The coating is prepared by modifying the surface of a water-based acrylic paint by adding ZnO nanoparticles as a photocatalytic coating. The coating is investigated for its UV absorption properties and photocatalytic activities are evaluated. The coating is characterized by electron microscopy, and water contact angle is evaluated for investigating the wetting behavior of the Styrofoam before and after coating. The mechanical properties of the water-soaked Styrofoam are observed to improve after the application of the ZnO coating. The ZnO top coating on the acrylic paint has shown active photocatalytic activity, increase in the mechanical strength of the Styrofoam, and therefore, improved lifespan. |
