Abstract | Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) or Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (PCS) is a nondestructive technique used to evaluate the size of submicron particles in a colloidal solution. In DLS, the size distribution function ofthe DLS system depends on the hydrodynamic diameter of particles, which always results in a size larger than the actual size of particles. Therefore, in this research, we tried to decrease the hydrodynamic size of the nanoparticles. A gold nanoparticle aqueous colloid prepared in water medium used as a model sample in this research. The size of the nanoparticles is investigated in DLS with the addition of organic solvents, namely methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol. Different volume concentrations of alcohols are added to the colloid and measured the effect of concentrations on the DLS size distribution. The results are correlated with the actual size of the gold nanoparticles obtained by using electron microscopy. At the end of this study, we concluded that this approach failed to improve the accuracy ofDLS measurement. In this study, the uncertainty calculations are performed for all the samples and we determined that we cannot rely on this measurement approach. |
