AbstractIn this research, we prepared Zinc-Tin-Oxide (ZTO) thin films at room temperature on a glass substrate by using a simple and solid phase deposition technique. Typically, it is difficult to prepare ZTO thin films, which involves complex chemical preparations and mostly requirestemperatures above 200 °C. In our research, we deposited thin films of ZTO at room temperature on glass substrates using spark deposition technique. The technique is simple, cost-effective and quick. The morphological, crystalline and optical properties of the deposited ZTO thin films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and the electrical resistance of the thin films were measured at room temperature. SEM investigations showed formation of a nanoparticulate porous thin film on glass substrates, whereas XRD analysis confirmed the presence of ZTO crystalline phase along with mixed phases of binary oxides of Zn and Sn (ZnO and SnO2). The crystalline phase of ZTO was further improved by subjecting the thin films to annealing at 500 °C. Optical absorption spectroscopy also revealed a strong absorption in the UV range, while absorption was reduced in the visible light indicating wide bandgap of ZTO. However due to the porous and discontinuous nature of the thin film, we did not get conclusive electrical behavior from the thin film.
