AbstractThis study was conducted to determine the efficiencies of the water spinach, water hyacinth and cattail plants in the treatment of pig wastewater. It was found that the organic loading rates of 50-300 kg COD/(ha-d) resulted in about 75- 90% COD removal in the water hyacinth units, while the water spinach units operating at the same loadings and COD removal about 20- 70%. The effects of installing gravel media at the bottom of the water hyacinth units were not significant. The effluent of the aquatic treatment units operating at the organic loading rate of 200 kg COD/(ha - d) could satisfy the effluent standards set by the Ministry of Industry, Thailand, based on BOD5 and SS. Also, the best COD removal efficiency of the aquatic treatment unit was found at HRT of 20 days. Finally, water hyacinth plants were found to contain N content more than water spinach and cattail plants.
