Abstract | The effect of prolonged aeration , in terms of sludge retention time ( SRT ) or hydraulic retention time (H RT ) , on biological phosphorus removal in anaerobic - aerobic ( A-A ) activated sludge process was studied by u sing laboratory scale continuous system and batch tests. The study was to find out the relation ships between the changing of organic compound, i.e . carbohydrate (glycogen ) , in the s1udge a nd t h e phosphorus deterioration under the effect of the prolonged aeration . Synthesis wastewater was employed along with all t he processes. The short SRT or HRT , such as 4. 5 days and 5 hours respectively, within the rang tested could achieve a better performance of phosphorus removal . On the other hand, a significant deterioration of phosphorus removal was observed in the course o f prolonged aeration (i.e. long SRT or HRT). It was observed t hat there was no great difference in the amount of carbohydrate (glycogen) in sludge during the process of prolonged aeration, however , the deterioration of phosphorus removal was still occurred. The deterioration of phosphorus removal might not be due t o the un availability of carbohydrate (glycogen) in the sludge. |
