AbstractBored piles are found to be suitable deep foundations for high rise buildings in Bangkok. They readily offer the flexibility needed in the selection of the pile size as well as the bearing stratum. The ultimate loads of these bored piles can be estimated rom the load settlement curves using the Butler & Hoys' method and the Mazurkiewiz's method. In the Butler & Hoys' method the load settlement curve should have a pronounced curvature while the test load must exceed 50 to 60 percent of the ultimate load in the case of the Mazurkiewicz's method. Chin's method over-estimated the ultimate loads. From the instrumented pile load tests, a values are back calculated for the clays and Ks tan6 and Nq values are estimated in the sand, These values can be used in the static formula to determine acceptable values of the ultimate loads. A safety factor of 2 to 3.5 is employed for obtaining the design load from the ultimate loads. the nominal pile spacing is three times the pile diameter and with this spacing the frictional behavior dominated. The thickness of the pile cap ranges from 2 to 5 m depending on the height of the building. The Converse-Labarre's formula can be used to estimate the group load. Negative skin friction can arise from the upper soft clay as well as due to deep well pumping. Also, the piezometric decline due to the deep well pumping increases the effective overharden pressure, thereby increasing the shaft resistance and end bearing in the sand layer
