AbstractA total of 189 laboratory pullout tests were carried out on welded wire mats embedded in compacted lateritic soil under high nor mal pressures of 1 tsm to · 13 tsm. Three bar sizes, 1/4" !'6, 3/8 " 9} a nd 1/2 " 9} each having grid sizes of 6 "x6 " and 6 " x9 " were used f o r the welded mats under three soil conditions namely : dry of optimum , optimum, and wet of optimum. The magnitude of the pullout resistance was found to be influenced by t he bar size , mesh size, compaction condition of the backfill , and overburden pressures. Pullout tests conducted on longitudinal members only yielded frictional resistance in the order of 8 to 1 5% of the total pullout capacity . Thus ; the major contribution t o the total pullout resistance of the welded . wire mesh grids is the passive resistance mobilized in front of the transverse or bearing members which is consistent with the results previously r e ported on the soil-grid reinforcement interaction. Comparison made with previous investigation s made by Amin (1989 ) . u sing lower normal pressures indicated that the pullout resistance can a l so be modeled by a bilinear curve which displayed similarity with the results of direct s h ear tests on the same backfill. This result seems to supplement previous observations regarding particle breakage phenomena· inherent to lateritic residual soils at the range of high . normal pressures. Very good correlations were obtained when actual data of the passive resistance were compared to t h e theoretical predictions of Peterson and Anderson (1980 ) , Jewell et al (1984 ) , Rowe and Davis (1982 ) and Bergadoetal (1989 ) . Consequently empirical equations are proposed for approximating the total pullout resistance of steel grids of a definite geometry u sing similar backfill as that used in t his study .
