AbstractA full-scale test embankment on Deep Mixing improved ground with two different configurations, namely wall type and pile type, were constructed and subjected to loading. Field observations were made during and after embankment construction, in order to elucidate the behavior of the improved ground with the different configuration. The measured results indicated that: (1) The laterai movement and settlement of wall type improved ground are less than that of pile type improved ground, when subjected to the same loading. ( 2) The deformation pattern of pile type improved ground is simple shear type deformation, where the bending stress is developed in the improved soil , whereas the deformation pattern of wall type is sliding. Both of these results indicated that the wall type improved ground is more effective in resisting against horizontal loading than the pile type improved ground.
