AbstractThe purpose of this study is to determine geotechnical criteria for the design of the Klong Tone pit, Krabi Lignite Mine, Changwat Krabi, southern part of Thailand. The Khlong Tone pit is one of the proposed pits that will be opened up to support additional electricity generating capacity of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand lignite-fired power plant. Available data concerning the geotechnical criteria for the design were collected. Additional field investigation, geological mapping, joint survey were carried out to verify the soil and rock sequence and joint set parameters. In situ direct shear tests along discontinuities of claystone and carbonaceous clay in the high wall and low wall were performed . In situ direct shear tests of dumped materials at spoil dump were done. The sand cone field density test were used to establish the in situ bulk density of materials. Laboratory direct shear tests along discontinuities were also done. The potential of slope failures and their failure mode were identified by field investigation and kinematic testing using PANET's net. Slopes were evaluat ed in terms of factor of safety by HOEK & BRAY's techniques. To determine the excavatability of various mine materials the graphs relating seismic velocity to rippability and the graphs relating strength to fracture spacing were used . Results obtained indicated that only the low wall slope is susceptible to slope failure . For the proposed mine stopes the suitable slope angles for overall slope and slope between berms are 70 and 280 respectively in the low wall. In high wall and end wall t he suitable slope angles for overall slope and slope between berms are 470 and 800 respectively. The suitable slope angle for overall slope and slope between berms of spoil dump are 190 and 300 respectively. The surficial materials can be excavated using digging machine while the materials in overburden and lignite zone are rippable .
