AbstractHanoi lies in the Red River Basin which was formed as a result of the tectonic reactivation at the end of Paleogene subperiod. The basin was filled with Neogene and Quaternary sediments. Sediments exposed in Hanoi range in age from Pleistocene to Holocene epoch and consist of Thai Binh, Hai Hung and Vinh phuc formations of different origins. The landform features include alluvial terrace, back swamp, natural levees and oxbow lakes. Hanoi is located on an active seismic region belonging to the soft earthquake environment where maximum magnitude could reach the value of about 6.5. The area is under annual flood threat . The Red River dike system has an ability to control flood up to an elevation of 13. 5 m above MSL . Hoa Binh reservoir would cut off flood peak at Hanoi by about 1.2 m. Typhoon caused heavy losses in the coastal area of Vietnam. There are some foundation problems such as differential and excessive settlements du e to unadequate geotechnical investigation and foundation design. Construction materials used in the city are allu:vial sand, silt and clay. Present rate of solid waste production is 840tons/day or 0 . 68 kg/person/day . Sanitary landfill method is used for solid waste disposal at Bode site. This site could spread diseases and contaminate t h e environment during flood period. Surface water is abundant and is used only for irrigation purpose . Middle Lower Pleistocene aquifer has an estimated extraction discharge of 2.13 million m3 /day. Quality of ground water of the aquifer is good except concentration of iron and manganese cations is rather high.
