Abstract | The estimation of trip matrix is an essential component in transportation planning. But, t his involves large scale survey and cost , which a developing country cannot afford. Therefore , it would b e useful to develop a mode l wl1i c h is flexible for the limited traffic flow data and could trade off accuracy to the extent of avail able data. Such an a n a lysis would facilitate a planner who is constraint to estimate the trip matrix under the financial limitations. Presently , interest has been evinced in formulating combined distribution - assignment mode l s (CDA ) , u sing feed back effect between trip distribution a nd traffic assignment. Such models are preferred , because they are not much affected by the assignment model specification . However , the complexity in solving a general case , lead to make different hypothesis and various formulation of CDA mode l s. In this study, a Combined Incremental Distribution Assignment (CIDA ) model is proposed , which assumes less abrupt changes in the trip pattern. The pro posed heuristic model updates old trip matrix through a step - by - step increment, using traffic flow data. Therefore, when the traffic flow data is limited, the additional information would b e provided from the old trip matrix. Using t h is flexibility, the accuracy variation was analyzed for the limited amounts of traffic flow data. This analysis was carried out on three different imaginary Network configurations , namely grid type, radial type and baiterzen type. The results showed the similar trend in all three cases studied. This analysi s was extended to study the trade - off situation between cost and accuracy u sin g an assumed cost function. The convexity of the mode l was satisfactory during these tests. Since , personal computers are abundantly available now, a computer program was developed to b e compatible with micro computers. But, such programs have limitations in capacity. As such the program developed did not permit for extensive analysis. However , the results suggest that this heuristic model could be developed as a good planning tool . Future research may focus o n designing a nd assembling a suitable data set that ca n be used for extensive tests on this heuristic model and for comparisons of t h is mode l with other existing trip matrix estimation models. |
