| Abstract | This study examined the present role of paratransit, taxis and " tuk-tuks " , in Bangkok. Primary data necessary to analyze the characteristics in taxi and tuk-tuk usage as well as the relevant information needed to draw up the demographic and occupational profile of taxi and tuk-tuk drivers were collected through field and on-board surveys. The findings indicated that taxis and tuk-tuks were the two most i mportant paratransit services that provide the greater flexibility in travel and better accessibility to all places within Bangkok ' s domain. Presently, a total of 13,493 and 7,406 registered taxi and tuk-tuk vehicles, respectively, are providing indispensable services to cope with t h e unprovided and varying movement purposes of the Bangkokians whom majority are reliant to publicly provided transport services. The information obtained from the surveys of taxi and tuk-tuk passengers revealed that despite the high cost of taxi and tuk- tuk travel, widespread usage of both modes by all persons of different socio-economic groups having varied journey purposes were observed. The convenient , speedy , and comfortable travel by taxi were not only availed by people of high income groups but also significantly by the low income segment of Bangkok ' s population; Likewise , the versatility in travel offered by tuk-tuk at the same time cheaper ride than tax i attracted more patronage from people in low income brackets of the society. However, the current fare negotiation practice taxi and tuk-tuk was found to be disfavored by the each mode. A new fare structur e of which either system of fare collection or a fare to be set government is preferred . for both users of a meter by the The recommendations of the study stress t h e need of the government to exercise control over paratransit operations particularly to control the fares, to control on the rents of taxi and tuk-tuk, and to exercise strict control on licensing of drivers. Recommendations further emphasize that safety measures especially on tuk-tuk operations should be given careful consideration. |
