AbstractThe study is concerned with the construction and design, the flow system, and the role in the industrial and commercial activities generated . by the newly constructed deep water port at Songkhla, replacing an o ld coastal port. The new Songkhla port was opened in 1988, it is operated by a private company. The flow system was found influenced by the port design, equipment and port services. An effect of competitive ports was directly observed in t he flow system. While comparing the actual flow with the forecasted flow a low performance of the port was found out but there were several basic elements which could help to recover the low performance in the near future. At the present rate of port performance the port cannot achieve the calculated Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) but after a correction in port services that is containerization of cargo handling, if could recover the l arge gap between forecasted and actual revenue collection. A very positive impact on industry and commerce would bring a strong positive change in the flow system which has already a good performance on import. A ten year projection was calculated to analyse the future trend of the cargo flow. A port monitoring and evaluating methodology is proposed.
