AbstractThis study involves a· systematic approach for the identification of poor value areas in a door lock manufacturing plant and suggests the better value alternatives through the application of Value Engineering techniques. Because of specific nature of the problems considered in this study, three different Value Engineering job plans, i.e., DARSIRI Job Plan, Mudge' s Job Plan and VE Standard Five Phase Job Plan have been used for value improvement. I DARSIRI Job Plan is used· for the reduction of scrap generated at various production stages particularly at Power Washer and Spray Bake. Mudge's Job Plan is used for material conservation through the revision of design specifications of poor value items. The Standard Five Phase Job Plan is used for packaging modification in order to reduce the freight charges per unit. Along with other Value Engineering techniques used in various phases of job plans, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique is used for the evaluation of various alternatives obtained during the creation phase and selecting the best alternative on the basis of different criteria. This study also includes the findings of the application of Value Engineering job plans in the aforementioned areas. The scrap produced at Power Washer and Spray Bake has been reduced by more than 80% and thus US$ 944.25 per month can be saved due to scrap reduction. Through the systematic approach suggested by Mudge, a saving of US$ 730.4 per month has been estimated in the material cost of Rose T-Turn Auxiliary of Inner Trim Assembly for DC 9470 lockset and thus the value of this part is increased by 28%. Moreover a saving of JJS$ 144 per month can also be achieved due to scrap reduction at Power washer in Rose T-Turn. Freight charges can be reduced by 24% through the 10% reduction of the width of box pack and the modification of the existing stacking geometry of the cases ~nd pallets. Hence a cumulative saving of more than 2 million baht annually has been achieved through this study. The savings potential indicated by these studies confirms that as a management technique, Value Engineering is an important productivity improvement tool which can be exploited in the manufacturing industry.
