AbstractResponse Spectrum Analysis (RSA) has been found to underestimate the inelastic responses of tall buildings due to higher mode effects. The use of a single response modification factor for all the significant modes results in the underestimation of higher mode responses as the higher modes undergo lower level of nonlinearity as compared to the first mode. A Response Modification Analysis Procedure was developed in this study, where the Response Modification Factors for displacement were calculated in terms of time period (T) and cracking strength ratio (R) which represents the different modes and the levels of nonlinearity. The factors were calculated for modal SDOF systems using UMRHA procedure with Modified Flag Shaped Hysteresis Model at different periods of vibrations, cracking strength ratio and hysteretic properties for a large number of shallow crustal ground motion records. A simple expression was developed through nonlinear regression analysis that can be used to approximate mean Response Modification Factor for displacement.
