AbstractDetail thematic maps of rain erosivity, soil erodibility, and slope were prepared from the rainfall data, soil analysis, and contour information respectively. SPOT HRV data of 3 bands (26-08- 1986) was used f .or the Unsupervised Classification and subsequently for the Supervised Classification in identifying seven basic land use/ land cover classes. All the derived information were combined together using GIS facilities available in ERDAS in developing an erosion ยท hazard map for Hanguranketa, Sri Lanka. Eroded areas 1 : identified as barren lands was spatially delineated with the same 3 band combination of SPOT HRV data. Further, land management practices and the field erosion status at Hanguranketa were investigated through an extensive farmer survey and field observations. Eighteen sub watersheds within the study area were also delineated and the erosion status at sub watershed level was assessed in comparison with the eroded area identification map. Subsequently, priority sub watersheds where implementation of intensive conservation methodology is urgently required, were recognized. Finally, all the derived and available data was integrated together in developing conservation strategies and planning for the sustainable utilization of the land resource at Hanguranketa, Sri Lanka.
